Current and former General Internal Medicine staff and residents gathered at the University Golf Club on June 13 to celebrate GIM research fellows.

The event began with a keynote from Dr. Nadia Khan, who described how she became interested in research and the mentors who helped her along the way. Dr. Khan outlined her research on how culture affects how South Asians, Chinese, and Caucasian populations respond to cardiovascular events.

This year’s recipient of the Faculty Teaching Award was presented to Dr. John Ronald. The award allows residents to recognize a Division member who has made an impact on their Fellowship program.

GIM fellows gave updates on their research projects:

  • Dr. Peter Chen: Post-operative atrial fibrillation and stroke, a meta-analysis
  • Dr. Lawrance Chow: Using simulations to develop competency in serious illness conversations
  • Dr. Jesse Greiner: Economic sustainability of health care in Canada
  • Dr. Renee Janssen: Piloting take-home drug checking in BC
  • Dr. Greg Schmidt: Electronic medical records in Kenya (AMPATH)
  • Dr. Samantha Young: Current opioid agonist therapy and fentanyl exposure

To close the evening, attendees recognized the graduating PGY-5 residents and wished them all the best.
